Biography:
David L. Cohen is a principal in the law firm of Cohen
Durrett. Mr. Cohen represents management in employment and labor law, with expertise in personnel law, wrongful termination, discrimination and harassment claims, wage and hour issues, issues relating to union organization, contract negotiations and handling of strikes and unfair labor practice charges.
A major part of Mr. Cohen's practice focuses on preventing claims against employers. This is accomplished through drafting of employment documents including applications, employee handbooks, disciplinary and termination forms, as well as on-site training for employers and management. Preventative and consulting work for employers enables Mr. Cohen's clients to anticipate problems that may arise and avoid claims of unlawful conduct and/or establish defenses needed to defeat such claims if they are brought by employees. Mr. Cohen has conducted management training courses and lectured for professional organizations such as Lorman Educational Services and the National Business Institute, as well as provided in house training for the Sacramento Craftsmen Guild, the Sacramento Trades Guild, The Builders Exchanges of Stockton and Redding, U.C. Davis, Blue Diamond Growers, United Way, the California Grocers' Association and Raley's-Bel Air, along with dozens of other private companies.
Mr. Cohen was admitted to the Bar in 1983 after attending law school at U.C. Davis. After graduation, Mr. Cohen worked as an Assistant District Attorney for the County of Ventura for one year before returning to the Sacramento area to enter private practice. He is a member of the State Bar of California, President of The Employers’ Council, Past President of the Fairytale Town Board of Directors, Past President of Active 20/30 #1, a former member of the Sierra Adoption Services Board of Directors, the Sutter Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, and the Greater Sacramento YMCA Foundation Board of Trustees, the founder of People to People, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Downtown Rotary.
